I started my job as a website consultant and started calling clients in Ireland. It was a B to B website process, which was organized by a company in Salt Lake, India. The job was really tough, and very few people could stick to it. I was very specific and learnt the process well. Moreover, people in Ireland were very decent and gave us time to explain what this actually was. Those days in the middle of 2008, the knowledge about websites was merely known by people and the advantages of having a website for the business was not really known or felt. We used to tell them about the importance of being online over the web and explained to them the features, advantages and benefits of having a website for the business. The story was different for each and every business, depending on the nature and type of business.
We used to target small and medium-sized businesses and offered them website design packages starting from Euro 250 in 2008. The e-commerce business was not in play at that time. So, we were just doing brochure websites of different sizes and volumes, and those were just HTML websites. From 2009 onwards, PHP coding was known, and we added CMS (content management system) for websites so that the client can add and edit content of the website on the existing structure of the website. It became very popular as the clients were happy to have control of their websites. For any confusion, they used to contact the account manager for assistance.
As a website consultant, we were learning and sharing at the same time to gather clients in order to support our process. By 2010, we were knowledgeable enough and started talking about search engine optimization, e.g., Google, Yahoo and Bing. We used to explain keyword ranking of keywords to our clients for better visibility on the World Wide Web (www).
At the same time, Google introduced Google Business Page for local business attention on the web. So optimization work was also in full swing for local page ranking, which was a monthly job to be done by people specialized in search engine optimization work, known as SEO experts.
The website consultant is supposed to work with website designers, programmers, SEO technicians and also the account manager for a particular website, done for a business or an institution. If it is an e-commerce website, then support can be required from time to time, as it is a fully functional website and is available 24/7.
A good website consultant never speaks about the pricing of the website. His job is to honestly explain the features, advantages and benefits of having a website. And we have seen that once the concept is clear, the client comes up and asks for a price for what is offered. A website consultant is a person who should guide the client about the prospect of the business as per his target audience and help him to reflect his services and products properly in the website which he or she has opted for. Also, making him popular on the web is also one of the most important concerns, which is done by search engine optimization.
Also, to mention that a website consultant’s job is kind of throughout the day and night. It is mainly dependent on the clients’ availability and support, which is required from time to time.
